How does the FIFA World Cup 2026 format work?

Short answer

48 teams, 12 groups of 4, group stage of 72 matches, then a 32-team knockout round, all the way to the final on July 19, 2026.

The full picture

The 2026 edition is the first FIFA World Cup with 48 teams instead of the long-standing 32. The qualification was expanded so every confederation got more slots — UEFA (16 teams), CAF (9), AFC (8), CONMEBOL (6), CONCACAF (6, including the three hosts), OFC (1) and two inter-confederation playoff winners (2).

The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of 4 (named A through L). Each team plays the other three in its group once, so the group stage runs 72 matches over the first two weeks.

The top two from each group advance to a Round of 32, plus the 8 best third-placed teams across all groups. That makes 32 teams in the knockout bracket — Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place playoff, final. 104 matches in total across the tournament, up from 64 in Qatar 2022.

The final is on Sunday July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The whole tournament runs across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
